What is a co-pilot ceremony?
A Co-Pilot Wedding is an awesome way to make your ceremony personal, fun, and meaningful. It’s when a friend, family member, or loved one (anyone, really) takes the lead as your Co-Pilot Celebrant, while an authorised legal celebrant (such as me!) handles all the legal parts of the wedding.
It’s the best of both worlds. Your ceremony feels personal, but (of course) everything is still 100% totally legit.
What does the legal celebrant do in a Co-Pilot Wedding?
Good question - thanks for asking! There are three main legal obligations on the day:
Saying something called the Celebrant’s Authority
Completing the official marriage paperwork
Making sure the couple say their legal vows to one another
What can your Co-Pilot Celebrant (friend or family member) do?
Pretty much everything else! I’ve created a handy list below shows exactly what parts your Co-Pilot Celebrant can say, and what the legal celebrant needs to handle.
The Welcoming
Intro aka The Couple's Spiel
Readings
The Asking
Traditional Vows (Assisting)
Personalised Vows
Exchange Of The Rings
The Celebrant’s Blessing
Wedding Announcement
Kissing (Assisting!)
On the day, it’s roughly a 90% / 10% split - your chosen person takes care of the heart and personality of the ceremony, while I subtly - but very clearly - ensure all the legal requirements are met.
There are a few small things I’ll handle in the months leading into the ceremony, but on the day, that’s the basic rundown.
How does a Co-Pilot Wedding work?
That’s where My Celebrant Buddy comes in. Your Co-Pilot Celebrant (your friend or family member) will receive a series of short lessons to help them confidently build and deliver the ceremony - from the intro to the final kiss.
Then, I (or one of my trusted celebrant partners) will be there on the day to complete all of the legal obligations and make sure everything runs smoothly.
Why couples love the Co-Pilot Ceremony
It’s personal. It’s meaningful. It’s fun.
And best of all — it’s completely legal.
